SOUTH AFRICA FIELD CAMP
The South Africa field camp will be located in Cape Province in the vicinity of Cape Town (index map, upper left). Approximately half of the camp will be spent in the Langebaan area near Saldanha, then the camp will move to the Gordon's Bay area on the east side of False Bay (geologic map, upper right) for about the second half. then end with about 10 days in the Simon's Town area in the lower Cape (opposite Gordon's Bay on west side of False Bay, see geologic map).
Moving the camp like this allows the students to study different geologic environments: Tertiary sediments and fossils in Langebaan, ancient sediments and structures in Gordon's Bay and granites and metamorphic rocks in Simon's Town. Students will prepare geologic maps, measure sections, prepare cross-sections and write reports for all three areas.
2012 Itinerary
For this year the South Africa camp will be split between Langebaan (14 days) and Gordon's Bay (14 days). As an example of the general itinerary, we will:
- begin with an examination of the Cape Supergroup near Cape Town for a 2 days, then,
- move to West Coast Park near Langebaan where students will map the recent coastal facies (10 days)
- then travel to Gordon's Bay for 10 days to map the folds and structure in the Cape Sandstones,
- at various intervals day trips will be taken to examine rocks and outcrops near Langebaan and Gordon's Bay.
