ACADEMIC CREDITS
For the 2012 two 6-credit field camps will be offered, the first one in South Africa and the second split between South Africa and Kenya. Both camps are 4 weeks and cost the same (except for airfare which is separate). This year there are two payment options:
1. regular academic credits through MTU, total cost $6,142.
2. a CEU option, 24 CEUs with a total cost $4,942.
Students are urged to explore the CEU option with their advisers/departments as it is significantly less expensive and is exactly the same in terms of work and instruction as the 6-credit option. Many departments will accept the CEU option once it is explained.
GE 4916 (Field Geology in East/South Africa) 6-credits
4-week (28-day course ) which includes mapping exercises and field trips, in South Africa/Kenya. Cost includes 6 credits tuition, room, half-board (lunch and dinner) for 28 days, in-country transportation, Global Mapper software package.
CEU (CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS)
The CEU option may be an attractive option to students who need a field course in geology but who do not need academic credits. There is no difference in content between the CEU course and the credit-based course; students from both programs attend the same camp, participate in the same actiivities and have the same assignments. Students receive a certificate instead of credits. (Click here for more explanation of CEU.)
24-CEU's
This is a 4-week (28-day course ) which includes mapping exercises and field trips. Cost includes 24 CEU's , room & board for 28 days, lab fees and books, in-country transportation, Global Mapper software package.
(Note: the conversion from credits to CEU's is usually 1 credit = 4 CEU.)
Not included in fee
The fee does not include airfare to and from Africa or personal items and expenses. No alcoholic beverages are included. Some breakfasts (in Nairobi) are self-catering (apartments have kitchens) and students are responsible for their own breakfast foods. Box lunches in field and full dinners are provided. On some travel days students are expected to pay for their meals on the road.
Early Arrival/Late Departure
Students arriving early or leaving late will be billed actual costs for additional room and board.
