FINANCIAL AID
External Scholarships
There are a number of places that offer scholarships for field camp. The first place to start is your own institution. A number of geology departments have designated scholarships for field camp or field work. Start with your advisor and then go to the department head or chair. Also check with you Study Abroad office. If you need a letter from us we will be happy to furnish one.
The Association of Women Geologists (AWG) offers the Crawford Scholarship ($500) for qualified men and women to attend field camp. The deadline is February 16, 2010.Their web site can be found at: http://nagt.org/nagt/programs/awg_crawford.html
Program Scholarships and Aid
Most students who have taken this course report that it does qualify for financial aid through their institutions. Michigan Tech does not have financial aid available to non-Tech students but some scholarship and assistantship aid is available through the program (see below).
Scholarships
A limited number of partial-tuition scholarships are available. The average scholarship is $1000 with a range of $500 to $1500. Scholarships are awarded on a semi-competititive basis. In most cases successful applicants will be notified within 30 days of application. Contact Dr Wood at jrw@mtu.edu for details.
Assistantships
1-2 assistantships are available which pay $500 to $1500 each depending on qualifications and experience. Students receiving assistantships are expected to perform specified duties associated with running the field camp. Assistantships are awarded just before the camp begins in May to qualified students who express interest and demonstrate ability. Students selected should have an interest in returning in subsequent years as assistant instructors. Contact Dr Wood at jrw@mtu.edu for details.
Assistant Instructors
THis is not financial aid but provides an opportunity for advanced students and graduate students to return to East Africa, usually associated with thesis work which is conducted after the field camp. Assistant instructors help the instructors in teaching the field course. They receive expenses including airfare and a small stipend. Preference is given to former students who have taked the course.
