Course offerings worth 5 or 6 credits of field work will be offered in 2010. Students desiring 6 credits can take both courses below. The 5-credit course is 4 weeks and includes intensive mapping in the Southern Kenya rift valley. The 1-week (1-credit) course includes a week mapping the reefs and studing reef ecology near Mombasa.  This year we are also offering a CEU (Continuing Education Unit) program. Click here to review that program.

GE 4916 Field Geology of East Africa (5 credits) (Long description) This 5-week course in field geology is intended to be the equivalent of a 5-6 week stateside field camp. The course will focus on the geology of the eastern branch of the East African Rift Valley in south-central Kenya from Tanzania to the equator. Studentsd will map structures, identify lithologies, make cross-sections, produce geogic maps, measure section and cover all the basics  generally covered in a geologic field course. Students will spend 5 days/week in the field. We will make 2-3 stops per day of 2-3 hour duration so that students can study and absorb the geology. Students will be expected to spend an average of two hours/day in the evening compiling and organizing notes, materials and samples or attending lectures and seminars. Maps and reports will be handed in at various times.
