ACADEMIC CREDITS
For 2010 we offer a 5-credit and a 6-credit field camps. The main difference is the 6-credit course adds a 7-day excursion to study and map the reefs and tidal flats on the Kenya coast from Mombassa to Kilifi.
GE 4916 (Field Geology in East Africa) 5-credits
This is a 4-week (28-day course ) which includes mapping exercises and field trips, mostly in the Kenya Rift. It is the same as the 6-credit course but does not include the 7-day reef excursion at the end (see GE 4931 below).
Cost $5,500
includes 5 credits tuition, room & board for 28 days, lab fees and books, in-country transportation and access fees. Airport pickup and return is also included.
GE 4931 (Special Topics in Geology 1-credit
This i1-credit course add an additonal week to the 4-week field course (GE 4916 above) to make a 5-week (35-day course ) which includes mapping exercises and field trips. This course adds a 7-day reef excursion at the end of the 4-week course. Cost: $1,100 includes 1 credits tuition, room & board for 7 days, lab fees and books, in-country transportation, reef trip, boat time and access fees. Airport pickup and return is also included.
CEU (CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS)
The following program is a more economic alternative available to students who need a field course in geology but who do not need academic credits. This program is popular with students whose departments will accept a CEU certificate for satisfying their field requirement. There is no difference in content between the CEU course and the credit-based course; students from both programs attend the same camp, participate in the same actiivities and have the same assignments. Students receive a certificate instead of credits. (Click
here for more explanation of CEU.) This program is also available to others interested in the geology of East Africa.
20-CEU's
This is a 4-week (28-day course ) which includes mapping exercises and field trips, mostly in the Kenya Rift. It is the same as the GE 4916 course but does not include the 7-day reef excursion at the end.
Cost $4,350
includes 20 CEU's , room & board for 28 days, lab fees and books, in-country transportation, and access fees. Airport pickup and return is also included.
CEU 4932 24-CEU's
This is a 5-week (35-day course ) which includes mapping exercises and field trips. The first 4 weeks are mostly in the Kenya Rift. and includes a 7-day reef excursion at the end. Cost: $5,200 includes 24CEU's, room & board for 35 days, lab fees and books, in-country transportation, reef trip, boat time and access fees. Airport pickup and return is also included.
(Note: the conversion from CEU to credits is 4 CEU = 1 credit. This is about the middle of the "normal" range for most institutions.)
Deposit
A $500 deposit is required to hold a seat in the course. The deposit is fully refundable up to 15 calendar days before the beginning of field camp. The deposit will be applied to the program cost.
Not included in fee
The fee does not include personal items and expenses or airfare to and from Kenya. Some students reported that the cost of roundtrip airfare to and from Nairobi was less than $1000 last year (2009) but the average has been about $1500 for the last 4-5 years. No alcoholic beverages are included. It does not include the Michigan Tech application fee. Snorkeling equipment is not included.
Students taking the reef course and wishing to SCUBA dive the reefs will have opportinities to do so at their own cost. All students will have the opportunity to snorkel the reefs but must either bring their own equipment (recommended) or rent it.
Early Arrival/Late Departure
Students arriving in Nairobi early or leaving late will be billed actual costs for additional room and board.
