THE CEU PROGRAM
In response to students expressing interest in a more economic alternative to our Africa field camp we now offer a CEU (Continuing Education Unit) program as an alternative to the traditional academic credit-tuition based program. Click
here for program costs. The following FAQ answers the most common questions students have in regard to the CEU program.
What is a CEU?
A CEU is a Continuing Education Unit which is like an academic credit given for satifactory performance in a class or unit of instruction.
What are CEU's used for?
CEU's are a common means of requiring that certain post-graduate professionals remain current in their profession and is often a requirement for license renewal. Teachers, social workers, doctors, lawyers, etc. or anyone who needs a state license to operate most commonly required to earn a certain number of CEU's for renewal.
What is the difference between a CEU certificate and academic credits?
A CEU carries no academic credit, no grade other than P/F (pass/fail) and does not count in your GPA. (Note: many universities often do not count field camp credits in your GPA anyway, especially if they are from another institution.) It usually does not appear on your transcript, but can (should) be included on your resume, where you can call attention to it if you are so inclined. (It will likely stand out more if highlighted on your resume than if it only appears on a transcript, which many employers do not request anyway.) To convert from CEU to semester credits typically graduate deans divide the number of CEUs by 4.
How many universities and colleges accept CEU's instead of academic credits for the Geology Field Camp requirement?
Almost all in our experience, especially when the economies are pointed out and the fact that the instruction is the same as for the academic credit program. See the guestion below.
How do I know if my institution will accept CEU's?
Simple. Just ask your advisor or departmental chair. The geology field camp is usually a departmental requirement and is in the pervue of the department. You should only need your advisor's permission. However it is wise to make sure the department chair is in the loop.
Who actually offers this CEU?
This CEU program is run by Michigan Tech faculty and graduate students with a some assistants/instructors from other accredited academic institutions who have taken the course previously. Check the
FAQ section for instructor qualifications.
What are the differences between the CEU and academic programs in terms of what we actually do in the field camp?
They are identical in terms of content, quality, instruction, duration and student assignments. Students from both programs work side-by-side. You mainly just do not receive academic credit, which as pointed out above, you may not get anyway depending on your university (not department) policies.
When do I actually get the CEU certificate?
We try to issue them in the field before students depart. However it is occasionally necessary to send them after you arrive back home. In any event, you should have the certificate within 2 weeks of course completion. We will also send a notification to your department if you provide us with an email address.
